Prafulla Chandra Ray β€” Mercurous Nitrite & India’s First Pharmaceutical Company

The chemist who built India’s own medicine industry

In 1896, a young Indian chemistry professor named Prafulla Chandra Ray made an important discovery: a stable compound called mercurous nitrite, made in his own small laboratory in Calcutta. It was the first major chemical discovery from an Indian lab to be recognized by scientists around the world β€” proof that world-class chemistry could be done in India, using Indian resources and Indian minds.

But P.C. Ray did not stop at discovery. He believed that science should directly help ordinary people, especially in matters of health. So in 1901, he founded Bengal Chemical & Pharmaceutical Works β€” India’s very first Indian-owned pharmaceutical and chemical company. Before this, India had almost no domestic medicine manufacturing; nearly everything was imported. Ray’s company began producing affordable medicines within the country, for the country.

Ray was also known for something else: he used much of his own personal earnings to support and fund younger scientists and students, believing talent should be nurtured wherever it was found, regardless of how much money a family had. He also wrote a detailed history of chemistry in ancient India, to remind the world β€” and Indians themselves β€” that India had a long and rich scientific tradition of its own, long before European laboratories existed.

Why this matters today: P.C. Ray connected four things that are often kept separate: scientific discovery, practical manufacturing, national self-reliance, and generosity toward the next generation. For anyone thinking about business or innovation today, his life is a clear example: a discovery is only truly valuable once it reaches the person who needs it, made in a way the nation can be proud of, and priced so ordinary people can afford it.
